To use its feature set at its full functionality, users need a smartphone and our app to run. Due to the way Bluetooth works, for iOS users the app needs to run on top, while for Android users the app can be running in the background.
A workplace is a "closed ecosystem", where employers can encourage the adoption and use of MyBubble by its employees -- allowing it to function at the top of its abilities. We have observed the challenges that other apps have had in public uptake, which alike MyBubble, ideally has everyone using the app. Employers can foster a high-uptake ecosystem where their employees can get feedback and encouragement in living good social distancing and hygiene behaviours.
While most contact tracing apps and MyBubble leverage the same Bluetooth technology for proximity ranging, at a high-level, the purpose and use is where the two diverge.
Contact tracing logs close contacts between people, resulting in a notification if they have been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case. As the positive case is identified, Public Health officials or the app will reach out to these contacts and encourage them to self-assess and take appropriate action. This requires the gathering of time, device-to-device interaction, and diagnosis release of users.
MyBubble is focused on encouraging preventive behaviours like good social distancing and hygiene practices. MyBubble does not gather interaction data, and instead provides real-time warnings and alerts on close contacts, risks with high density areas, and periodic reminders to help create better awareness of their behaviours which can help them reduce exposure and transmission risk.
Given public perception challenges with contact tracing, which has resulted in low uptake, MyBubble offers an alternative which minimizes the encroachment of privacy while focusing on encouraging, sustaining, and giving feedback on good behaviours in the workplace.
MyBubble was designed to minimize the gathering of data necessary to function. In particular, we have avoided the gathering of personal health information (PHI).
Depending on the features selected by the workplace -- MyBubble in its simplest form it can avoid gathering any personally identifiable information (PII) and store all data natively on the device rather than uploading to a centralized server.
MyBubble is currently in its piloting phase as we test its core functionality in the field. Our next steps include improving the product and allowing for greater customization (e.g., providing a 'white label' version, customizing rules and parameters, etc.). Further, we are planning to develop an Enterprise-level view which can allow greater features for employers to communicate, measure, and reward behaviours.
